What is a TENS Unit?
A TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) unit is a compact device that delivers mild electrical impulses to nerve endings through the skin. These impulses help block or alter the brain's perception of pain. Healthcare providers commonly use TENS therapy to manage a variety of conditions, including osteoarthritis, tendinitis, and fibromyalgia.

Electrical stimulation works by interfering with the transmission of pain signals to the brain and by promoting the release of endorphins—your body’s natural painkillers—enhancing its ability to relieve discomfort.
How can I get one?
A TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) unit is often used in combination with other therapeutic devices. While NYSHIP patients may obtain a TENS unit independently, pairing it with devices such as a Lumbar-Sacral Orthosis (LSO), Cold Compression Therapy (CCT), or Cervical Traction Units (CTU) is encouraged, but required for No-Fault cases.
A prescription is required to obtain a TENS unit. Insurance covers prescription appointments with our Community Wellness Nurse Practitioner. Once the appropriate paperwork is filed and approved by insurance, you will receive your TENS unit and be given instructions for use.

Please note that No-Fault claimants must pair their TENS unit with either LSO, CCT, or CTU devices.
